Basic sciencethomas 43 weeks 6 days agoAfter discussing this aspect for early treatment and the fact that I am only eleven months infected. My viral load jumped from 700 in december 2008 to 20,400 in October this year. My question to my doctor was if in basic medicen you are always recommended to treat before the simptoms get worse. But with HIV you are told to waite until it is bad before treating. I believe that a level of counter preduction is in play with the heading of diverse side efects on anitviral treatment. It seems basic that the body is exposed to greater side effects if the precious CD4 tCELLS are reduced significently. Where can information on this area of research be found. thanking all thomas

Paediatric Comorbidityhenry gardiner 46 weeks 2 days agoMy son is HIV positive and has no immunity to chickenpox, every year he gets it and in the worst senarios has been diagnosed as having chicken pox on his arms and legs and measles on his torso. If the school informs me quickly enough I can take him to be vacinated and he remains well. I am extremely interested in any comments of experience in mainly childhood sicknesses and the effect HIV has on them. I also am interested in knowing if HIV children non-disclosed are more likely to be challenging in thier behavior- distructive and obusive???? Henry from Scotland

Male circumcisionMark Lyndon 1 year 6 days ago"The trial was stopped early because of futility" It appears to have been stopped because the rate of transmission in the group where the man had been circumcised was 50% higher than in the control group (18% v 12%). This is not the first time that HIV in women has been linked to male circumcision. See the link for a study that concluded: "History of multiple sexual partners, history of STD, high household income, **partner circumcision**, and past oral contraceptive use remained strongly associated with HIV-1 infection even when simultaneously controlling for other covariates." Circumcision is a dangerous distraction in the fight against AIDS. There are six African countries where men are more likely to be HIV+ if they've been circumcised: Rwanda, Cameroon, Ghana, Lesotho, Malawi, and Swaziland. Eg in Malawi, the HIV rate is 13.2% among circumcised men, but only 9.5% among intact men. In Cameroon, the HIV rate is 4.1% among circumcised men, but only 1.1% among intact men. If circumcision really worked against AIDS, this just wouldn't happen. We now have people calling circumcision a "vaccine" or "invisible condom", and viewing circumcision as an alternative to condoms. ABC (Abstinence, Being faithful, Condoms) is the way forward. Promoting genital surgery will cost African lives, not save them.

Male circumcisionHugh Young 1 year 3 weeks agoIf condom use after circumcision is essential to prevent HIV transmission, and (as we know) condom use is essential to prevent HIV transmission before circumcision, then why bring in circumcision at all? The Wawer et al. study certainly suggests that circumcision may increase the risk of transmission to women, even if the couple waits until the wound is healed. We know that the risk of transmission to women is greater than the risk of transmission to men. Doesn't this risk cancelling out any indirect (and so far, purely hypothetical) protection to women, and cast grave doubt on the overall efficacy of circumcision as a preventive measure?

Nosocomial transmissionJason Wheat 1 year 16 weeks agoGetting humans to donate a body fluid or organ with out compensation may seem like a great idea, but if you look at the business end of the industry you will see that it would fail. Pharmaceutical companies have a huge demand for Human Plasma to make vaccines and other medicines. The processing of a donor for each plasma donation is very extensive and can seem like overkill at times. It is a process approved by the FDA and signs of injection drug use are part of each evaluation prior to each donation. Because I have seen the collection process of both blood and plasma, I myself would be more comfortable receiving plasma. Regardless if the person was paid of not, the donation screening and testing process is very extensive compared to a standard (non- compensated) whole blood donation.
